The Faculty of Law of the University of Lapland invites applications for
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in Intellectual Property Rights, IP Management and Sustainability for a fixed term of 36 months, starting from 1st January 2021.
The Faculty of Law at ULapland is responsible for the education of one fourth of the lawyers in Finland. Our new students follow the renewed degree structure, which combines multiform modes of study and independent study. Our teaching is now more practical than ever, without neglecting the theoretical foundations of the discipline. We study law and justice comprehensively, addressing a range of different sectors of society. Our research is carried out in collaboration with the local stakeholders and international partners.
The appointee’s duties will include conducting research in the field of Intellectual Property Rights, IP Management and Sustainability at the Faculty of Law, in the context of the Academy of Finland funded project “Shaping, fixing and making markets via IPR: regulating sustainable innovation ecosystems (SHARE)”. The SHARE project is a consortium between the University of Helsinki/Faculty of Law (Prof. Taina Pihlajarinne/project PI and Prof. Jukka Mähönen/sub-project PI) and the University of Lapland/Faculty of Law (Associate Prof. Rosa Maria Ballardini), funded by the Academy of Finland. At ULapland, the appointee will work under the supervision of Associate Prof. Rosa Maria Ballardini. However, close collaboration with the team from the University of Helsinki will be pursued on a constant base. The main working language will be English.
We are looking for candidates who have:
• Doctoral degree (law or social sciences or otherwise relevant to the post) completed by the beginning of the post (1.1.2021);
• are committed to live in Finland during the post-doc period and work with us at the University of Lapland;
• an interest, as well as a solid background that matches, complements and adds to the research areas related to the SHARE project – as listed below;
• ability and motivation to conduct independent scientific research;
• good or excellent oral and written proficiency in English.
The SHARE project explores the emerging need for embedding ‘strong’ environmental sustainability in the IPR- and finance-related regulation of the innovation ecosystem of sustainable technologies, like climate change mitigation technologies. We critically assess the role of IP and finance laws in creating incentives for developing and promoting diffusion of sustainable innovations via closely looking into three main stages of the CCMTs’ innovation ecosystem: 1) financing (market shaping), 2) regulating the process (market fixing), and 3) sharing, licensing and transferring (market making) the innovations. Overall, Share will develop a comprehensive academic study, comprising also of concrete recommendations, for how Europe could lead the transformation towards a more sustainable market economy.
At ULapland the post-doctoral researcher should have a solid background knowledge and understanding of the intellectual property law system, with particular focus on IPR practices and IPR management related issues. A background knowledge of sustainability science is not required. However, the candidate should have a genuine interest on sustainability and its reflections into the IPR legal framework and related IP management practices. Moreover, experience and interest in conducting empirical research work would be an advantage.
The salary range will be €3,100–3,600 per month, depending on the merits and experience of the appointee. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
The application must be accompanied by the following enclosures (in English):
• A curriculum vitae;
• A list of publications;
• A motivation letter (max 1 page);
• A tentative research plan (max. 3 pages) that relates to the theme of the project.
Applications and appendices are to be submitted by 29 October 2020, 13:00 by email as a single file (pdf) to: kirjaamo(at)ulapland.fi or as hard copy by post to: Lapin yliopisto, PL 122 (kirjaamo, Yliopistonkatu 8), 96101 Rovaniemi, FINLAND. The application documents may also be submitted using the University’s secure mail service: https://securemail.ulapland.fi. When using secure mail, enter firstname.lastname@example.org as the recipient’s address. The application documents will not be returned.
In addition to work with the SHARE team, the appointee will benefit from a wide range of research and academic activities and collaboration with other research projects and research groups at ULapland, especially with the research group Law, Technology and Design Thinking (https://www.ulapland.fi/FI/Kotisivut/Law,-Technology-and-Design-Thinking...), led by Associate Prof. Rosa Maria Ballardini. The appointee will also be invited to take part in supervision of ongoing Doctoral and Master’s degree theses, as well as in teaching on relevant subjects related to the theatrics of the SHARE project. Naturally the appointee will be encouraged to attend international conferences, workshops, research collaboration events, project planning and other meetings within the international networks of the University of Lapland.
We offer an international academic host institution equipped with excellent research facilities and infrastructure and professional support for societal integration for the appointees and their families.
Further information on the position may be obtained from Associate Professor and Vice Dean (research) Rosa Maria Ballardini: email@example.com.
