The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a Position as

PraeDoc (W/M/X)

(full-time, 40 hours per week)

in the Research Group “Numismatics” (Head N. Schindel) of the Department of Classical Studies (Head: A. Pülz)

The Austrian Archaeological Institute is Austria's largest research institution in the field of archaeology and ancient studies. We study human history from the Quaternary period to modern times, taking into account material archaeological sources and the written tradition.

The successful candidate will work in the Research Group Numismatics within the Department of Classical Studies and will be responsible for recording, reviewing, and analysing ancient coin finds from Austria. Your Tasks

  • Scholarly documentation, including data recording, photography, and identification of Austrian coin finds from past and current excavations, museums, and private collections

Your Profile

• Master’s degree in a historical or classical studies discipline, preferably with a focus on numismatics
• Academic training in numismatics and relevant practical experience in the documentation and identification of coins
• Ability to work independently and creatively, willingness to integrate into a multidisciplinary work environment, and strong team spirit
• Good computer skills, especially experience with databases
• Willingness to travel within Austria for project-related purpose

• Class B driving license

Our Offer

The position starts on October 1st, 2025 and is advertised for 15 months and ends on December 31st, 2026. The annual gross salary for this position is € 52.278,38; according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).
