Within the laboratory, the RSBE2 ISOMer team is a recognised leader in scientific expertise on visible and near-infrared remote sensing of marine angiosperm meadows. The position will be part of this team, led by Pierre Gernez (see organisational chart), under the supervision of Pierre Gernez and Laurent Barillé. It is part of the European project REWRITE (Rewilding and Restoration of Intertidal Sediment Ecosystems for Carbon Sequestration).

Missions :

Sampling marine angiosperm meadows for carbon measurements in the Bay of Cádiz, the Aveiro Lagoon, and the Bay of Bourgneuf

Applying the ICE CREAMS algorithm for mapping Blue Carbon stocks using Sentinel-2 data

Main activities :

  • Sampling the foliar parts, roots, and underlying soil of Zostera noltei meadows in 3 to 4 intertidal ecosystems across Europe

Conducting measurements on sediment cores

Measuring carbon using two different methods

  • Proficiency in Python and R programming languages to master the ICE-CREAMS machine-learning algorithm for identifying marine angiosperms.
    Utilizing field spectroradiometry data
  • Mapping the spatial distribution of Blue Carbon in 3 to 4 intertidal ecosystems across Europe using Sentinel-2 satellite data in two seasons and in sites undergoing restoration
Comparing results with other vegetated ecosystems (salt marsh plants and microphytobenthos of intertidal mudflats)
