Offer Description

The French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) is a multidisciplinary French public research organization that, for nearly 80 years, has been committed to building equitable partnerships with countries in the Global South and the French Overseas Territories.

As a key player in the international development agenda, the Institute aligns its priorities with the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Together, IRD researchers and their partners develop practical, science-based solutions to address the global challenges facing societies and the planet. This mutually beneficial approach makes science and innovation powerful drivers of sustainable development.

IRD operates under the joint supervision of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

The CECI Laboratory (Climate, Environment, Coupling and Uncertainties, UMR 5318) is a joint research unit bringing together the CNRS, CERFACS, and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD). Based in Toulouse, France, it brings together researchers, engineers, and PhD students specializing in numerical Earth system modeling, high-performance computing, and advanced data analysis methods.

CECI's research focuses on climate variability and climate change, interactions among the different components of the Earth system (ocean, atmosphere, and land surfaces), data assimilation, multiphysics coupling techniques, and uncertainty quantification. The laboratory plays a leading role in the development of state-of-the-art coupled climate models, contributes to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) that underpins the assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and develops widely used software tools for the scientific community, including the OASIS coupler.

CECI benefits from a world-class international research environment and privileged access to high-performance computing facilities. It maintains extensive collaborations with leading French and international laboratories in climate and environmental sciences, providing an outstanding setting for research training and the development of interdisciplinary projects that integrate environmental sciences with the social sciences and humanities.

  • Une mission attractive

Contribute to the European SAFESEA project by informing stakeholders about the current state of knowledge regarding uncertainties in projections of climate stressors (warming, acidification, and deoxygenation) affecting marine ecosystems; assessing stakeholders' risk perceptions of these stressors; adopting a storyline-based approach to the co-development of climate information; and establishing a stakeholder engagement protocol for the duration of the project.

Under the supervision of the SAFESEA Scientific Coordinator at CECI (Boris Dewitte), your responsibilities will include:

Main Activities

Identify and engage a broad range of stakeholders at regional, European, and global levels to help shape the project's strategy and support public decision-makers.

Conduct participatory assessments to identify stakeholders' needs, understand their perceptions of the risks associated with ocean warming, acidification, and deoxygenation, and co-design priorities across multiple spatial and governance scales.

Co-develop decision-support tools that contextualize scientific knowledge on these climate stressors within socio-ecological frameworks, tailored to the needs of different stakeholder groups and governance levels.

Design and implement an integrated communication strategy on ocean warming, acidification, and deoxygenation, ensuring accessibility, inclusiveness, and alignment with the project's impact objectives.

Maximize the uptake and long-term sustainability of project outcomes through targeted exploitation activities and policy engagement at national, regional, and global levels.

Strengthen the long-term capacity of local stakeholders through co-created training and educational activities, empowering current and future researchers and decision-makers to understand and respond to ocean acidification and related climate stressors.

Monitor and evaluate project activities against defined key performance indicators (KPIs), ensuring agility, transparency, and continuous learning throughout the project's lifecycle.

  • Votre future équipe

The postdoctoral researcher will benefit from a highly stimulating scientific environment within the GLOBC team at CECI (6 permanent researchers) and the Environmental Biogeochemistry team at IPGP (4 permanent researchers). The successful candidate will also interact closely with partners of the European SAFESEA consortium including CEAZA and Univ. Santo Tomas in Chile, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), and the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification, offering opportunities for scientific collaboration, international mobility, participation in international workshops, and the co-development of research activities.
